From the days when keys were a status symbol of wealth, power, and privilege to the electronically coded keys that are phasing out the typical metal keys, the future of keys may play an interesting role in our security. The hand carving of keys was once considered an artful practice. The production of hand carved keys meant years of training and perfecting the process.
When the key cutting machine was invented it became much easier to get copies or spares made in advance. An emergency could be avoided by simply going to a local cutting machine and asking an employee of the facility to perform the task. Considering that there was little training needed for a wider margin of success, these types of cutting machines were found in hardware and do it yourself stores throughout the country.
